Lyra kicked off the year with its our first big event, a Smash Bros tournament. Around 50 people joined the fun including 40 competitors and 10 spectators. The tournament ran in a double elimination format meaning 2 losses and you were out, keeping the matches intense and unpredictable.
Top 8 was streamed live on Twitch, marking Lyra’s first ever stream, and it drew players from Atlassian, Google, AWS, AMD, and Canva. Cash prizes added extra excitement, with $200 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third.
Preparation for the event was its own adventure. The night before, Daniel, Anh, and Gordon stayed at Lyra until 4 in the morning practicing, unlocking characters, and setting up 10 consoles. Daniel + Gordon managed to catch a few hours of sleep, while Anh well, he slept in a plastic bag. It was messy but worth it. A huge shout out to Jackson from Atlassian for offering advice as a tournament organiser if we stuck to their original plan of 4 consoles instead of 10, the event would’ve been over before it started.

Matches were insanely competitive. Lyra participants came close to breaking into the top 8, but the final bracket was dominated by some of Sydney’s top players. The grand final was particularly unforgettable. Sam : ranked number 2 in Sydney and representing AWS, was given a handicap including skipping his main and still walked away with the win.
The tournament has already sparked a wave of interest internally, inspiring the launch of a Lyra Smash Club as part of our Lyra Clubs initiative. From late night prep sessions and makeshift sleep arrangements to high level gameplay, it was a fun, intense and slightly ridiculous way to kick off Lyra’s 2026 event calendar.
We can’t wait for what’s next.
